Sugar cane packaging is a completely eco-friendly alternative on the packaging market, related to the law commonly known as SUP and the associated fees and legal requirements from 1 July 2024.
Ground sugar cane, a waste product of the sugar extraction process, is the building block of eco-friendly packaging. The product decomposes in a home compost bin within 150 days.
Soup containers - sealing methods
There are several methods for sealing soup containers. One of them is a lid, often made of plastic. Another method is sealing with foil or eco-friendly sealing paper with sugar cane containers. This is a natural alternative to plastics, for which the introduction of eco-friendly solutions in catering will be required by law from 1 July 2024.

1. Is there a soup container or packaging on the market that is not subject to the SUP fee?
Yes, sugar cane soup containers sealed with paper are a product for which no fee is required.
2. How resistant are sugarcane containers to temperatures, given that soups can be hot?
For very hot dishes, the recommended delivery time is one hour. For soups served warm, it is two hours, and for cold soups, a few hours.
3. Can soup containers for sealing be used with commonly available sealing machines?
Yes, the sealing temperature is 200°C, which is standard for the vast majority of devices. The sealing time is 5 seconds. Sealing moulds can be purchased from the company. The price depends on the device in the premises, but is around £50 net per mould for two soups.
