Eco-friendly biodegradable cups

Eco-friendly biodegradable cups

Products: 2

Today, disposable cups can be made from dozens of different materials. However, not all materials are created equal – neither for the environment nor for the image of the establishment using them. Eco-friendly biodegradable cups are a category of products that stand out primarily for their raw material: instead of conventional paper with a PE coating, they are made from sugarcane, paper pulp or cellulose from renewable sources. These are materials that decompose naturally after use – without leaving behind microplastics, without burdening the environment for decades.

If you run a café, a catering business, organise events or manage a food outlet that has consciously opted out of using plastics – this category is exactly what you need.

How do biodegradable cups differ from ordinary paper cups?

This is a question many bulk buyers ask themselves. The difference lies not only in the certifications – it lies in the material itself and in what happens to the cup once it is thrown away.

A standard disposable paper cup is made from paper coated with PE (polyethylene). The paper itself is biodegradable, but the PE coating is not – and it is precisely this coating that makes such a cup unsuitable for composting or standard paper recycling without special processing.

An eco-friendly biodegradable cup works differently. Its core components are:

  • Sugar cane – a renewable raw material and a by-product of the sugar industry. Sugar cane cups are fully compostable, heat-resistant and do not release harmful substances when in contact with hot drinks.
  • Paper pulp and cellulose from certified sources – processed cellulose pulp, often in the form of moulded or formed cups. Fully biodegradable, suitable for recycling in the paper waste stream or for composting.

Both materials eliminate the need for a PE coating – instead, PLA coatings (a biopolymer derived from maize or sugarcane) are used, or the natural structure of the material is left as is where the application allows (cups for cold drinks, brief contact with liquid).

Eco-friendly disposable cups – an overview of available options

Sugar cane bio-cups

Cups made from sugarcane are one of the most recognisable products in the eco-friendly catering packaging segment. They have a distinctive natural appearance – a creamy-beige hue, often with a slightly rough texture – which immediately signals to the customer that the establishment consciously chooses eco-friendly solutions.

They are resistant to hot drinks, leak-proof and mechanically robust. Available in 250 ml and 300 ml capacities, i.e. in sizes suited to takeaway coffee and tea. Compostable in accordance with EN 13432 and ASTM 6400 standards.

Biodegradable paper pulp cups

Cups made from paper pulp are an alternative to plastic in the hot and cold drinks segment for short-term use. Produced without a plastic coating, they decompose in a composting facility within a few weeks. They have a natural, kraft-style appearance that fits well with the aesthetic of venues focusing on authenticity and minimalism.

Eco-friendly paper cups with a PLA coating

Some of the eco-cups in this category are paper cups with a PLA coating instead of PE. PLA (polylactic acid) is a biopolymer produced from corn starch or sugar cane – it is compostable under industrial conditions and is recognised as a fully-fledged alternative to plastics. PLA-coated cups retain an appearance and texture similar to classic paper cups, but are free from conventional plastic and are suitable for composting.

How to choose an eco-friendly biodegradable cup for your establishment

Capacity – 250 ml, 300 ml and other sizes

Eco-friendly cups are available in various capacities to suit your menu:

  • 250 ml – the classic size for coffee with milk, americano and tea. The most popular choice in cafés and restaurants offering takeaway drinks.
  • 300 ml – larger capacity, ideal for tea, a large latte or hot drinks served with plenty of milk.
  • Formats for cold drinks – wider opening, designed to fit lids or covers, condensation-resistant.

Lids and covers – a complete solution

An eco-friendly cup without a matching lid is only half the solution. The range includes compostable lids designed to fit specific cup diameters – both lids with a drinking hole and flat lids for cold drinks. It’s worth ordering cups and lids from the same supplier to ensure a perfect fit and the eco-friendliness of the entire set.

Kraft or white – aesthetics matter

Bio cups are available in two basic designs:

  • Kraft – a natural brown shade, unprinted. It looks authentic and fits in with the zero-waste trend and the venue’s minimalist design.
  • White, with or without print – more neutral, easier to match with the venue’s branding or with custom-printed cups.

Biodegradable disposable cups for events and catering

Outdoor events, trade fairs, food festivals and corporate catering are places where disposable packaging generates a huge amount of waste in a short space of time. Biodegradable disposable cups solve this problem without compromising on operational convenience.

Bio-cups made from sugarcane or paper pulp can be collected together with organic waste after the event and sent to a composting facility – without the need for separate plastic sorting. This is an argument that is increasingly appearing in briefs from organisers of large events and in the tender requirements of public bodies.

Why is it worth ordering eco-cups in bulk?

Just a few years ago, eco-friendly biodegradable packaging was significantly more expensive than conventional paper cups. Today, the difference in unit price has decreased significantly, particularly for bulk orders. Regular supplies of bio-cups made from sugarcane or paper pulp allow you to:

  • plan costs – a fixed wholesale price, no surprises
  • build your brand image – consistent eco-friendly messaging for your venue backed by a real product
  • meet requirements – increasing regulations on plastics in the catering industry

Order eco-friendly biodegradable cups

Eco-friendly biodegradable cups made from sugarcane and paper pulp are now a readily available, practical and image-conscious alternative to plastic and conventional disposable paper cups. The choice of material matters – both for the environment and for what your venue communicates to the customer with every drink served.
