Flap boxes and die-cut boxes – how do they differ?

  • added: 02-01-2026

Flap box – an economical standard for large requirements

The flap box (FEFCO 201 standard) is the most recognisable packaging in the world. Its design is based on four flaps at the bottom and top, which need to be secured with adhesive tape.

Why choose it?

  • Cost optimisation: it is the cheapest packaging option. If you ship large quantities of goods with regular shapes, flap boxes will allow you to significantly reduce the unit cost of each package.
  • Easy storage: before assembly, they take up minimal space in the warehouse or restaurant backroom.
  • Versatility: they are ideal for collective parcels, shipping heavier catering equipment or delivering bulk loose products.

Die-cut cardboard boxes – fast packaging and a "wow" effect

Die-cut boxes are structures that can be assembled without the use of tape (although tape can be used to secure the closure). Thanks to special locks and folds, the box forms a rigid, aesthetic box.

The main benefits for your business:

  • Time saving: it takes a few seconds to assemble a die-cut box. In the catering industry, where order fulfilment time is crucial, this is a real advantage.
  • Premium presentation: products in die-cut boxes look professional. If you run a shop selling original delicatessen sets, coffee or wine, the packaging builds the prestige of your brand from the moment the package is opened.
  • Safety: double side walls (resulting from the folding design) provide additional protection against crushing during transport.

Shaped and flap boxes and InPost parcel lockers

Some may now ask themselves: which parcel lockers are suitable for parcel lockers? It may come as a surprise to some, but InPost boxes are available in both flap and die-cut variants. After all, the only criterion for choosing a box here is its size. Box manufacturers offer both flap and shaped models designed for this operator's shipments.

Which type of box wins the battle?

If your priority is to maximise cost savings for large bulk shipments, go for a flap box. However, if you care about building your brand image and minimising the time your employees spend packing smaller, exclusive products, a die-cut box will be unrivalled.
