Disposable takeaway packaging and microwave ovens
The microwave oven is undoubtedly one of the most important appliances not only in the home, but also in catering establishments and restaurants. Even if we are not fond of cooking, thanks to the commonly known "microwave", we are able to heat, defrost and even cook something. In the following article, we will present what can and cannot be put in the microwave.
What disposable containers can we use for heating in the microwave?
It is important to remember that only packaging, containers and dishes designed for this purpose can be used for heating in microwave ovens. This information should be indicated on the label. Otherwise, it is worth having a basic understanding of which containers and packaging can be used to heat meals in a microwave oven.
What should not be put in the microwave?
- Metal and aluminium – even a small amount of aluminium placed in a microwave oven can cause eddy currents, sparks and ignition of the heated product. In addition, it is strictly forbidden to put aluminium foil in the microwave, as it will quickly catch fire.
- Plastic – some plastics are also not suitable for use in the microwave as they may melt. This information should be included on the packaging.
- Styrofoam packaging
Styrofoam packaging contains two toxic compounds that are harmful to humans. The first is styrene, which can enter our bodies through food and drink. This substance is considered dangerous because it is flammable, highly toxic, carcinogenic and very toxic in the aquatic environment. The second harmful compound is benzene, also considered dangerous to humans.
Toxins from polystyrene packaging enter food when exposed to high temperatures. Therefore, it is important to remember that you should never heat food packed in polystyrene in a microwave! If you see this type of situation in restaurants, try to explain that there are now much safer takeaway containers and packaging available.

What kind of dishes can we put in the microwave?
- Plastic dishes – as a rule, plastic containers are suitable for use in the microwave, for example polypropylene containers. However, as we mentioned earlier, before putting plastic packaging in the microwave, make sure that it is suitable for use in the microwave. Also, remember that we are trying to minimise the amount of plastic in our environment, so we advise against using this type of takeaway packaging.
- Paper dishes – containers and packaging made of paper are only suitable for short-term heating in the microwave.
- Takeaway containers and packaging made of cane pulp – cane pulp tableware is currently a trend in the takeaway packaging market, which is fully eco-friendly and meets all environmental standards.
